Who's really doing the fear-mongering?
National Post
Published: Thursday, July 26, 2007Re: Anti-Muslim Fear-Mongering, Letter, July 21; At War With Radical Islam, July 19.
Mohammad Maan's letter states that "certain circles" are "fear-mongering against Canada's Muslim community." If these ghostlike "circles" existed, David Harris, the Canadian Coalition for Democracies' senior fellow for national security, would be an unlikely member. His July 19 letter explicitly states that Muslims are part of the Canadian family who are owed protection from Islamic radicals and extremists. Rabid radicals are our enemy, he said, not moderate Muslims.
Mr. Maan also falsely claims that Mr. Harris's letter propagated the "canard that Canadian Muslims are 'seeking to fly the Crescent atop our legislatures.'"
Everyone knows moderate Canadian Muslims have no such unconstitutional intention. Islamic radicals and extremists, on the other hand, most certainly do and have said so endlessly -- Mr. Harris's unmistakable point.
Mr. Maan's letter reminds us that Canadians must come to grips with reality, and not let confusion and distortion distract us from the enemies we face.
Alastair Gordon, president, Canadian Coalition for Democracies, Toronto.
