This is just breaking news from down under, and only from short TV and radio reports from ABC, but remember the Cronulla "race" riots?

The non-Muslim criminal acts were perpterated by non-Muslim hooligans in an unjustified retaliation against Muslim social pressure on the beach for the last few years. There were over 100 arrests, about 18 charges, at least a couple of those against people who were "shamed" into coming forward, as their pictures were on TV.

The Muslim criminal acts occurred the following night, when Muslim youths assaulted several individuals in variious cowardly ways. There were also picutres of these assaults, although the assailants were harder to identify. However, no one in the Muslim community identified anyone, and several publicly said that it would be wrong to do so. There were no police arrests (or only one or two: I'm not sure which), as police said that they could not gather enough evidence to make the arrests.

The NSW labor government has, after 6 months, closed the investigation, saying only that they relied on the police judgment. It is hard to say how much political correctness played a part, but it is a fact that the police provided very differential treatment for the two sorts of criminal acts, especially considering that the Muslim act was clearly premditated, whereas the non-Muslim act was relatively spontaneous.

The opposition (liberal, but really conservative in Canadian terms) has complained both about the closing down of the investigation, and about the differential treatment.

My interpretation is that here too the police are subject to politicaly correct influences that prevent them from applying the law in an even handed manner.

All the best, John
