I am a recent convert as a supporter of the Conservative Party - and worked hard on Peter Kent's unfortunately unsuccessful campaign in the recent election. I am writing to you as I believe that your Government has made some positive changes in Canada's foreign and security policies. However some of your Governments actions continue to disappoint.
I refer to the article by Mary Vallis in today's National Post relating to the possible admission to Canada of Sheikh Riyadh ul-Haq. You should read that article. if you have not already done so. The quoted remarks of Mr. Solberg's spokesperson deserve an immediate and unforgiving response. Those comments suggest that a hatemonger such as Mr.ul-Haq may be welcomed into Canada as long as he doesn't preach hate here. By contrast, the President and other elected representatives of the Taiwanese Government have not been admitted to Canada even on a temporary basis. The admission of elected Taiwanese representatives will not result in violence or death - the same cannot be said of the prospective admission of Mr. ul-Haq.
The suggested safeguard attributed to Mr. Solberg's spokesperson, that "if a visitor to Canada publicly incites hatred while here, they can be arrested and prosecuted under our Criminal Code," rings hollow as there are others in Canada who have preached hate, similar to the preachings of Mr. ul-Haq, and who remain at large and uncharged.
Your primary responsibility is the safety of your citizens. You should not be admitting such people into Canada and you should be prosecuting those in Canada who incite hate and violence.
