Dear Andy,
I don't think there is any justification comparing China and the US. No one claims the US is perfect, but any comparison has them millions of miles apart.
There are protests and marches against the current US government, but these are allowed as free speech. But what if you did the same in China? Newspapers in the US write editorials, supporting or opposing policies of the Bush administration. I have yet to see a media report from an outlet based in China, criticizing the terrible human rights record there.
On the whole, the US is a free nation, whose citizens can assemble, express themselves in almost anyway....ask yourself if that was the case in 1989 Tiananmen Square, something the Chinese government still hasn't apologized for.
The US, perfect? No its not. But neither is Canada, Western Europe or every other country in the world. But to lump the US in with the likes of autocratic dictatorships like China, Myanmar, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia is just damaging to your credibility.
Stan.
