An open letter sent to Stephen Harper & Peter MacKay
Politically correct Pollyannas want to believe that the majority of Palestinians (as represented by Fattah) are moderates wanting nothing more than to live in peace with Israel - in a "just" two-state solution. Hamas' electoral win was presumably akin to Harper's minority win in Canada; Hamas merely swept away a corrupt "culture of Fattah entitlement" despite a majority disfavor for Hamas's Islamist fundamentalism. Recent events confirm that such optimistic speculation is less than naive.
Oslo's peace process has long been dead; the world was simply not prepared to pay for the funeral! Reading the Palestinian press, neither Fattah nor Hamas ever acceded to the existence of a Jewish State in what both consider a Muslim Waqf. Both Fattah and Hamas repeatedly and publicly have endorsed a long-term strategy culminating in the eventual destruction of Israel. Fatah's luminaries when speaking in Arabic to their constituents continue to embrace the 1974 PLO Cairo Declaration or "Phased Plan" calling for Israel's destruction? Both Fattah and Hamas have persistently employed armed militant wings in suicide-terror attacks against Israeli civilians.
With such foes, "negotiated peace" is futile! The best that can be achieved is an imposed cessation of hostilities by a unilateral disengagement and a "security fence". Israel in fact, is in Hamas' debt; by drawing international attention to her plight and linking her cause to the super-powers' "war on terror". Today Canada witnesses Mackay; a naïf flirting with Fatah; just like Bill Graham before him... the former Liberal foreign affairs minister, who persistently assured the Canadian public that Hezbollah and Hamas were Muslim Charity Organizations and not Terrorists.
