David Harris's letter is a timely example of the fear-mongering directed against Canada's Muslim community by certain circles in our nation. When Canadian Jews instituted religious-based rabbinical courts, there were no ridiculous accusations of "political Judaism" infiltrating Canada. When an Orthodox Jewish school in Montreal demanded that a neighbouring YMCA frost its windows because the school did not want Jewish youth observing scantily clad women, there were no questions about a minority community's loyalty to Canada.
Yet Mr. Harris chooses to selectively target the Muslim community with outlandish characterizations that only fan the flames of ignorance. His group has openly disseminated on its Web site the bizarre claim that Muslims are infiltrating the offices of the federal government. Now, his letter promotes the canard that Canadian Muslims are "seeking to fly the Crescent atop our legislatures."
Instead of maligning the Canadian Muslim community and fostering public mistrust, his purposes would be better served by building understanding amongst Canada's diverse communities.
