The fundamental principle of a democracy is the separation of church and state. The fact that Catholic schools are a breach of that principle in Ontario is surely not reason to abandon the entire principle that has proven so successful in creating tolerant, secular countries.

I am amused, and depressed, by the argument that because we have a breach of that principle, the only solution is to multiply the breach 30-fold. We either live with the minor breach, or launch a constitutional challenge to overturn a fact of Ontario life for close to 200 years, a fact that every immigrant coming to Ontario, myself included, knew was the deal when he or she arrived.

I cannot believe how much damage some people are prepared to accept in exchange for a pointless consistency, but as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds".
