Have you never heard of the "economies of scale"? The cost per student is much, much lower if we have a single public school system than if we have 30 different religious school systems. Why? Because we have a much small bureaucracy managing the system, fewer inspectors, less arbitration, fewer inspectors, fewer buildings, less land consumed, and so on. It is much cheaper to have one school with 900 students than 30 schools with 30 students each, even if some of those groups of 30 are sharing public facilities. It's Economics 101.
But the sacred (forgive me) principle here is the separation of church and state.
