Forcing children to attend secular public schools has a very different impact on children from minority cultures than it does for children from the majority culture, and makes is difficult or impossible for them to acquire the kind of education they need to maintain their culture in the next generation. It is a fine theory to suggest that young children should be educated together so that they will be able to share their different cultures with each other. But in reality a young child starting school does not have the cultural literacy yet to have much to share. If we want a sustainable multicultural society, we should not prevent minorities from getting the education they need to preserve their cultures while integrating in Ontario society as full citizens.
