Joanna, I have read the Koran and veiling is not a religious requirement. I have also read statements from Imams who have declared that veiling is not a requirement of Islam. Even the Islamic Republic of Iran does not require veiling although it brutally enforces the covering of heads/hair on women.

Veiling therefor is a cultural practice and/or a personal choice, embellished with romantic symbolism. The Government of Canada should not be in the business of discriminating on the basis of culture and/or personal choice, especially where proving a citizen's identity is critical for the administration of our democracy and our security.

For a Muslim who has presumably read the Koran to accuse other Canadians of intolerance and bigotry is amusing. The Koran is brutally intolerant and oozes hatred of unbelievers. Even today in Islamic countries people of other faiths are deprived of equal rights and much worse. To put it plainly, they are not equal to Muslims. That Joanna, is intolerable, and we will not allow this to happen in Canada without a terrible fight.
