Jenny, you are so wrong on a number of issues:
1) Canada tolerates freedom of choice in abundance. That includes Muslim women wearing burkhas, who are entirely free to do so. (You are correct to say Canada tolerates ignorance, though. I'd add - in some quarters - it is revered.)
2) Islam may say it's about peace but look around you. Where in the world is Islam fighting for peace? Where are Muslims petitioning, lobbying, protesting for peace? Where are the Islamic politicians & clerics pleading for peace, order, and love of their fellow men? Where in the world does Islam fight for the rights of Christians or Jews or Hindus - or even Muslims of different sects? Islam is ONLY about Islam and Muslims fight for Islam, not peace. Peace has nothing to do with it.
3) The argument about Muslim women coming here for a better future sounds very nice, in a liberal Canadian sort of way. But what is the "better future" that most Muslims seek in the West? To integrate gracefully into mainstream society? Hardly. It is to build a better Islamic life, an Islamic society within a greater society, with the goal to eventually overwhelm the existing society in favor of Islam. Claims of racism and discrimination is a tactic used in this goal and it's often used like a big stick. The burkha-clad Muslim woman may want her right to vote, but she isn't likely to be voting for anyone not willing to promote Islamic rights & laws within Canada. Please don't tell me the burkha-wearing Muslim wants to vote for a liberal secularist.
4) Burkha-wearing women in Canada are small in number now but will grow in increasing numbers. Small numbers today is no argument against anticipating the future. Legions of Muslims with any public access at all are calling for overwhelming and converting decadent western societies to Islam. The actions of legions of Islamists support this principle. Examples of intense intolerance towards other religions are equally legion, at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. Examples of Islam seeking and promoting peace or peaceful co-existence? Pretty damned slim.
I would argue burkhas are more about culture than Islam. If cultural, then arguments can't be made about religious freedom or religious discrimination.
