Wow! I can't believe the attention this issue has drawn in this forum. It's clearly a defining issue for many.
From a democratic point of view, the issue of burkas at the voting booth was well addressed by elected officials, from the PM on down to provincial government leaders. All agree full-face identification makes sense. It is the appointed bureaucrat who came up with this answer to a question no one asked - a bankruptcy specialist, no less (which makes his ruling more a dumb opinion than a compelling legal argument).
To Genevieve Simard, I concur with others who say there is essentially no attempt in English Canada to portray Quebec as racist in this matter. Most people share Quebec's objections to this.
