In Reply to: 'Burqa voting' decision undermines electoral integrity & ballot box equality posted by CCD Media Release

CCD periodically issues press releases on issues of concern to Canadians. Most of the CCD members and followers nod in agreement in respect of some or all of these press releases and take the time to express that agreement in a CCD discussion thread.

If you really want to help to make a difference, I encourage you however to do more.

Write in your own words to express your concerns to your Prime Minister, to the Ministers and department heads involved in the issue and write to your MP.

CCD issued a press release September 6th, 2007 entitled Elections Canada position on 'faceless voting' undermines electoral integrity and equality before the ballot box. That press release posted on CCD under the title 'Burqa voting' decision undermines electoral integrity & ballot box equality http://canadiancoalition.com/forum/messages/24770.shtml,

I was moved to write the following letter to our Prime Minister.

I hope this message and the following letter serve as an inspiration and example for all of you to do more then just nod your approval and post an approving message to the CCD discussion thread regarding issues of concern raised by CCD press releases.

September 11th, 2007

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

It is wholly inadequate to express your disappointment with Mr. Mayrand for on his own initiative and without request from anyone, making it a policy that Muslim women need not remove their veils when exercising their right to vote at electoral stations.

Mr. Mayrand must be relieved of his Chief Electoral Officer position immediately for he has embroiled your government in a completely unnecessary controversy.

Mr. Mayrand has committed the following grievous errors which taken together are unforgiveable.

1. He ought to have known that even if the law did not specifically require persons to attend voting stations without disguise or masks, it is obvious that the legislation that spoke to additional proofs for identification assumed the obvious that people would not show up to vote with their faces hidden.
2. He ought to have know that to make the policy he did would not only be in defiance of the obvious and common sense;
3. In acting on his own initiative for reasons that can only be guessed at, he made a policy that he had to know would attract controversy;
4. In reacting to your government's expression of disappointment, Mr. Mayrand demonstrates tremendous gall when he seeks to justify his policy on the basis that whatever the legislation does not specifically prohibit, is therefore permitted regardless of how absurd;
5. Mr. Mayrand has challenged your government to deal with the matter of his policy that defies common sense on the basis that you must legislate the obvious;
6. Even after Mr. Mayrand's lack of common sense and good judgment are made clear to him, he remains openly defiant seeking to justify his thinking and his policy.

Mr. Mayrand not only therefore completely failed to exercise good judgment and common sense when he conceived of this controversial policy, he has demonstrated a complete lack of judgment by his worsening the controversy he has embroiled your government in.

Mr. Prime Minister, Canada does not need loose cannons on its deck of command.

Get rid of this man. He is not only a liability to your government. He is a liability to the people of Canada.

Yours truly,

Bill Narvey
