A Muslim vote against veiled voting

National Post
Published: Thursday, September 13, 2007

If there was a referendum today on whether to allow women in burkas and niqabs to vote without showing their face, two things would be certain. First, as a Muslim Canadian of Turkish descent, I would be fasting on this, the first day of Ramadan. And second, I would be voting no.

As noted by Muslim Canadian Congress president Farzana Hassan, the covering of a woman's face is a Saudi tribal practice; nothing more. There is no directive in the Koran explicitly exhorting women to wear a niqab.

Living here in Canada, we need to abide by the same rules. In order for someone to confirm their identity, common sense would require showing their face. If need be, they can do so to an Elections Canada representative of the same gender on voting day.

Enough said. There are more worthy misguided policies, like public funding of faith-based schools, to argue against.
