CANADA CONDEMNS VIOLENT CRACKDOWN IN BURMA
The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the military action taken against protesters in Burma:
"Canada condemns the use of deadly force by the military and police against the monks and other protesters in Burma who were expressing their right to peaceful dissent, and calls on Burma to put an immediate end to such violence. Burma has an obligation to promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of its people, including the freedom of association and of expression, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"We reiterate our call upon the Burmese authorities to respect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the protestors and of all people in Burma."
Minister Bernier attended a G8 foreign ministers meeting in New York today, where the participants unanimously condemned the violence in Burma and called for a resumption of dialogue.
