SALIM...
More often than not I agree with your comments about Islam and the madrasses. However, it seems you are continuing the negative press, like several others, to bash John Tory's interesting facts.
Isn't it better we know what the Muslim world funded by Saudi Wahhabists and/or other fundamentalists are teaching and doing? If possible. But, if they decide not to join the public school system -- then, perhaps we keep an eye on what they're teaching. And those that do not we seriously wonder about. Of course, cells are specifically selected to assimilate and not cause suspicion. I dealt with one at Best Copy shop on Charles Street . Uncle Ahmad, who owned the business and was a cleric at a maddrass, said to the press his nephew Nabil was innocent and not complicit, but they caught him crossing the border with $8,000 cash and phony documents, I think some where passports.
The point being we go in stages rather than forcing immigrants to become full Canadian immediately though many try. And one of the the attractions to this grand country, and the USA , is because we are open to reasonable religions, private schools, hopefully funded. The Catholics had a good thing going; they have excellent teachers and higher marks, in general, than the public schools; but why exclude the others?
John Tory is the type of executive and leader who excels because he listens to the people and can be persuaded. If he was surrounded with "Yes Persons" then he might end up like Conrad Black. Plus, he never said he would just accept the other private schools without steps of approval including the public's.
Whereas Premier McGuinty initiated something more stealthily pervasive and drastic that you ahve not mentioned. The mandate was to study the electoral system and make a recommendation. I was one of the selected citizens, and though we all had positive intentions we were basically inexperienced and not capable enough to suggest MMP. We did not go to Germany and New Zealand to study their inept systems compared to ours, which is far better (but could use some retooling such as allowing MPPs to voice their opinion and vote for their choices, and how about accountability). Indeed, this whole process was ill-timed, and as far as I see it almost part of the slush fund, or an expensive grant for a referendum.
Why is McGuinty refusing to choose FPTP or MMP? What was his gambit? Is this the one promise he came through with all the way? Is this a vote grab? Were the citizens truly randomly selected with a database that we were never sure of? Will the 39 floating politicians be somewhat like senators, and represent whom?
As a Political Science Professor, who I admire, why didn't you write about this "change of vote for the sake of change"? We Ontarians once were the spine of the country, but should special interest groups become involved then you might end up having the bloc voters of the Sikh Party (that wishes knives at school), Jihad Party or The Canadian-Muslim-Moderate-To-A-Point-Party along with the Rocky-Mountain-Loco-Weed-Party. I jest, but...
This faith-based idea wasn't stupid, the lack of advertising and explanation was not well-thought-out, but not as obtuse as the Citizens Assembly For Electoral Reform chaired by a bureaucrat, who, in my estimation and experience, wasn't non-partisan and neutral. Ex-Judge George Thomson has accomplished some good things, but he had also been involved in several plans to the left (socialist) that never happened. Thus, he desperately wants this mandate to transpire. It will not happen but he will have another mandate on his resume ready for the second referendum like British Columbia. He pleaded with me to stay after I resigned with doubt after the second session. The predisposed gathering needed at least one person they could point a finger at -- see, he's against MMP and the process. I stayed through the whole thing, hoping that the wiser ones would stop it dead in its tracks. And if the citizens want an improvement they would start with political reform and suggest a proper study for electoral change.
Continue the awareness...
