How stupid and dangerous is John Tory's faith-based school funding? posted by Salim Mansur in Toronto Sun
I believe that Mr. Mansur's argument is flawed. Yes, it is permissable for the Ontario government to not fund faith-based schools according to the Charter. However, is it fair? No. His main argument of the funding of Muslim schools is also flawed. Based on Muslim schools' tuition of about $3,500 the schools are being government funded - just not by a Canadian government but by one is Saudi Arabia.
We are much better off funding faith-based schools, including Muslim ones, so they can be monitored to teach Canadian values, use accredited teachers and participate in standardized testing.
In the end of the day, one cannot say it is fair to fund students who are Catholic and not those that are Jewish, Muslim or Protestant. John Tory is right, unfortunately the people of Ontario are truly unaware of the true nature of his policy which is to make public education inclusive and not exclusive to those who are Catholic.
