Two votes for secular schools

Mr. Coyne has completely misread the mood of the province in setting out his interpretation of the backlash to John Tory's proposal to fund faith-based schools. It was not seen, as Mr. Coyne describes it, as fear of "Eek, a Muslim!" but a clear statement by Ontarians that we are and wish to remain a secular society.
The separation of church and state is one of our greatest traditions, and moving towards faith-based schools created a visceral reaction in many that religion would become institutionalized in our school system. Were it not for the constitutional exception for Catholic education, one could hazard to guess that introducing such a system today would also not be approved by voters. Let's be grateful for our secular government institutions.
