Who's to blame for Aqsa's death?

National Post Published: Tuesday, December 18, 2007

Prof. Emon questions whether it is "possible that there's something in [the faith of Aqsa Parvez's father] that influenced him to act so outrageously?" Fortunately, he tells us that in his research on the Islamic veiling tradition, "I have not found any punitive sanction against a woman who chooses not to veil that could even remotely explain Mr. Parvez's alleged actions."

Since her death has nothing to do with Islam, what might have caused it then? Here Prof. Emon points initially to "the ugly spectre of 'honour killings'," which he quickly explains as a response to the challenge Western cultural influences have posed to traditional values that root identity. From there, Prof. Emon leaps to his conclusion: Canada has an obligation to "create a climate where newcomers can openly participate in our society and culture with limited angst." So apparently, we at the least share responsibility for Ms. Parvez's murder

Of course, Prof. Emon's absolution of Islam is ludicrous. Islam is a living religion, and the fact that his research did not disclose the Saudi Arabian, Hamas, Taliban, al-Qaeda and Iranian brutal enforcement of oppression in the name of Islamic law is laughable. I trust Prof. Emon will speak out to give those from other cultures hope for what Canada can truly give them and their children.
