I would recommend people reading Joan Peters book, From Time Immemorial - The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict Over Palestine as a very accurate source on Arab Immigration to Palestine prior to 1948.

As a second source I would recommend Myths and Facts - A guide to the Arab - Israeli Conflict by Mitchell G. Bard. On psge 43 they report that between WWIand WWII the Jewish population grew by 470,000 and the Arab population grew by 588,000. 37 % of the Arab immigration was to take advantage of the higher standard of living that the Jews had made possible.

As a third source, Mark Twain during a visit to the Holy Land in the mid 1800s reported that the country was mostly empty. His book Innocents Abroad has some interesting information.

None of these books have been written by anyone Jewish. In fact, Joan Peters began her book on the premise that the Arabs were totally justified in their claims. This book proves that we are wrong in maintaining this belief. Definitely recommended if somewhat difficult reading because of all the statistics and her sources.
