Mark, your references to Justin McCarthy' s writing is interesting.
McCarthy's demographic analysis is posted to a pro-Palestinian blog site.

McCarthy's analysis by his own admission is based on best guesses.
What that blog and the comments posted at the end, presumably from McCarthy seeks to do is denounce the myth that the area to become British mandatory Palestine was virtually devoid of indiginous people.
That is a nonsensical mis-statement attributed generally to Zionists by anti-Israel/Jewish believers.
There are quite a number of demographic studies, including Zionist studies I have read over the years that confirm there were Arabs in the region as Jews began to immigrate and work the land they bought in the area. They also concluded that the Arab population increased in those years in part by birth, by being drawn by the Jews for better wages affording them a better life and perhaps another factor, but I don't recall.
Because of the difficulties with historical data, estimates as to the size of the indigenous population in the later part of the 19th century to the earlier years of the 20th century are uncertain.
Your reference to Mark Twain also appears to come from a link in that to an article "Quoting Mark Twain out of context on Palestine".
I was not making an all inclusive statement however by noting one thing Twain is credited with saying. I expect there probably were a few fertile areas, but most of the land was unworked and desolate as Twain described and other sources I have read over the years noted.
All this leads me to ask you Mark, just what is the point you want to make?
It is quite obvious where do you stand as regards the Israel - Palestinian/Arab conflict and the history preceding same.
Your quick opinion sniping is hardly informative.
Tell us why you take the view you do.
