There is no doubt, when Concordian University officials refused to permit former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to speak, that they have be been cowed by Muslim extremists who terrorized the university last year.

It is an outrage that our universities and our municipal, provincial and federal governments do not feel any obligation to protect our freedom of speech in public universities, against the violent protests of extremists.

Presumably this is a result of very poor judgment, rather than cowardice or connivance, on the part of Concordia officials. Nonetheless the Government of Canada, if necessary, should step in to ensure that the freedoms that Canadians died for in World War II is not so easily given up. We wait now to hear from Prime Minister Paul Martin and Premier Jean Charest. Will they defend our liberty?
