Apropos Edmund Onward James' reference to Gertrude Bell in his review of Shackled Warrior by Caroline Glick:

I wonder if James is aware of the fact that the Balfour Declaration (devoid of legal foundation) was vehemently opposed by Gertrude Bell, one of the era's greatest Arabists, a colleague of T.E. Lawrence and a member of British intelligence in Cairo. She wrote the British cabinet advising it that "an independent Jewish Palestine" was impractical because "[Palestine]...is not Jewish;" the native population would not "accept Jewish authority.... Jerusalem, is equally sacred to [the] three [Abrahamic]faiths and should [not] be put under the exclusive control of any one...." (Sanders, The High Walls of Jerusalem, p. 585)

Ms. Bell was also well aware of the fact that in 1897, during its first conference in Basel/Basle Switzerland (more than 40 years before the Jewish Holocaust), the World Zionist Organization had devised a strategy to colonize Palestine and as Herzl's diaries revealed, the objective was to create an expansionist Jewish "state," i.e., not a "national home" as referred to in the Balfour Declaration.

If the cabinet had heeded Ms. Bell's prophetic words, the Middle East and the world would have been spared the immense suffering and destruction that ensued as a result of the creation (through massive immigration of foreign Jews, force of arms, massacres, widespread rape, and ethnic cleansing) of an exclusionary, expansionist Jewish state in historic Palestine.
