The hospitals are overflowing with the injured, their loved ones and blood donors. "Since both communities were targeted, it is clearly an attack on India," an eyewitness said. Replace Hindus with Jews. Jaipur with Haifa and it all seems so very familiar. Both cities are also known for their beauty. Familiar is also the immediate reason for the terrorist attack. Later this month the Indian foreign minister is about to embark on a visit to Pakistan as part of the ongoing peace process between the two nuclear armed neighbors. In India, as in Israel, Islamists opposed to the process, demonstrate their displeasure by murdering innocent civilians. President Bush's visit to the Middle East has already been preceded by Hezbollah muscle flexing in Lebanon and rockets from Gaza killing a 70 year old woman only a couple of days ago. I am sure the Israeli security forces are holding their breath as past experience does not offer much consolation. As I am writing I get the dreaded news - Missile hits Ashkelon Mall: Babies, children among wounded. The world may more familiar with Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad or the Al Aktza brigade, but there is little difference between them and the terrorist groups operating in India. Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) was founded in 1992. It is a Talibanlike group inspired by Bin Laden headquartered in Bangladesh but with links to Pakistan. It is held responsible for terrorist attacks in Ajmer and Hydrabad . Students Islamic movement of India (Simi) is an indigenous Indian group founded in 1977 with the goal of "liberating India" i.e. reverting it to an Islamists ruled state. It's leadership has recently been rounded up and hence, may have had a hand in organizing the bombing. Though investigators are sure the attack was too sophisticated for them to have carried out by themsleves. Then, there is the most fearsome of them all. Lashkar-e-Tayyiba founded in 1989 in Pakistan. It focuses on "liberting Kashmir" but has engaged in terrorist attacks throughout India including the attack on the Indian parliament in New Delhi. Afterwards, Pakistan banned it and froze it's assets. It, too, has ties to Al Qaeda. There are more. Just as the Middle Eastern Jihadists wish to "liberate" the Israeli territory from Jewish rule, South Asian Jihadist wish to "liberate" India from Hindu rule. They are all committed to the creation of a Khalifat which will encompass all land which Muslims had ever ruled. Hence, they oppose any accommodation which would leave any part of those lands in non Muslim hands and use terror attacks to sabotage any action related to a "peace process." In other words, by now everybody with eyes in their heads should understand that innocent Israeli and Indian lives are part of the price paid for the slow, unending negotiations with Islamists so favored by pundits and diplomats alike. As long as the Israeli and Indian governments are committed to such a bloody process, the only question is how many lives and has everything possible done to minimize the damage. That will be the question haunting Indian authorities in the aftermath of the Jaipur attack. Were the bombers connected to the recent group of infiltrators from Pakistan? If so, could have they been stopped? As could be expected, authorities admit that "the intelligence community had an inkling that Rajasthan could be next on the radar of terrorists" but insist they had "no specific input that could have helped prevent the serial blasts in Jaipur." Analysts believe that "the heightened activity along the border and the blasts are not just a coincidence." Indeed, it could have been worse: "Since terrorists have not been able to execute in the usual high priority locations." Hints are also dropped that the terrorists sought to ferment trouble between Hindus and Muslims. Pakistan has promised to stop cross border infiltration BUT there it has a new civilian government and it is being tested. Moreover, Indians are about to go to the polls and a party responsible for a security breach can expect to be punished by the electorate. So, federal fingers are already pointing to possible state government failure. Yes, India, like Israel, is a vibrant democracy currently ruled by a government committed to the "peace process." So, it, too, must convince it's citizens that the price is worth paying. In both countries, every passing day makes the case harder and harder to make. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is the definition of madness. Unfortunately, that is exactly what both the Indian and Israeli government encouraged by the international community are doing.
