Finally someone has stated the obvious!! It has driven me crazy listening to academics and politicians and media repeating the same nonsense over and over... we have to be nice to China or China will cut off trade with Canada.
What utter nonsense! China sends us a hundred times more manufactured goods than go the other way. Those manufactured goods are largely made from Canadian raw materials. So will China stop buying $1 worth of raw materials from Canada that they can sell back to us as finished goods for $100? Guess who is being punished! The pain is all China's, so they won't do it.
The real reason is the Quebec corporations such as Power Corporation and Bombardier who have always been cozy with whatever government is in power in Ottawa, perhaps Power even being the kingmaker that put Paul Martin and other prime ministers in power. Those companies sell their services to the Beijing government and they could be punished. And who is running the Canada China Business Council? Look at their website and see the high level lobbying that has been going on.
Our disgraceful foreign policy toward Taiwan is for the benefit of Power Corporation, not for the benefit of Canadians or democracy.
Thank you Mr. Gordon for finally stating what so many of us knew.
