Hamm cool on owning domain name
By Murray Brewster / The Canadian Press
Two of Canada's premiers have turned down an Ontario
entrepreneur who wants money for sites he registered
on the Internet under their names.
Nova Scotia's John Hamm and Pat Binns of Prince
Edward Island have said no to Naresh Raghubeer, who
has registered other politicians' names as well,
including Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Opposition
leader Stockwell Day.
For now, johnhamm.com and patbinns.com will remain
under Raghubeer's control, though a third Maritime
premier says he's willing to talk about acquiring the
rights to bernardlord.com.
"I'm not willing to pay $1,000 or $10,000," New
Brunswick's Bernard Lord said in an interview from
Fredericton.
"But I will pay the cost of registering."
The money, Lord said, will come out of his own pocket
because he considers it a personal obligation.
"When you're in public service the way I am, people
can use your domain name to write things about you on
the Web," he said.
"It's been done before."
Lord already owns the domain names bernardlord.org
and bernardlord.net, which he says have been set
aside for future use. He didn't explain what that
meant.
Hamm said he was not worried about someone else
controlling his cyberspace name.
"I don't think I'm particularly concerned," he said
in an interview. "I don't really see what particular
value or harm can come from all of that."
A spokesman for Binns was equally ambivalent.
"We're not losing any sleep over it," said Pat
Foresy.
Raghubeer, who has worked for Ontario Conservatives
and more recently the Canadian Alliance, refused to
comment when contacted by both telephone and e-mail.
He has said previously that he registers the names of
Conservative premiers to protect them from Opposition
mischief. For example, in Ontario, the Liberals
registered mikeharris.com and have used it to blast
Tory government policies.
However, in an interview with the National Post last
year, Raghubeer said he wasn't squeamish about
selling the names to anyone with a grudge.
Domain names can be registered through several
companies, costing anywhere between $25 US and $200
US.
