While it is a pleasure read excellent and incisive articles such as this one by Gerald A. Honigman, one can in the reading, only get a great sense of forboding for what the future holds for the State of Israel and world Jewry.

It appears that President Bush has become afflicted with the same self aggrandizing delusions as Presidents before him that he stands on the verge of bringing peace to the Middle East. The more impressed he gets with himself as the one who can do what no one before him could, the more urgent the need to push forward.

Bush, having invested himself so completely in being the one to bring about Middle East peace, is in his overeagerness to succeed, now has begun to minimize and ignore the fact that the Palestinian end game based on Mahmood Abas' own words has not changed at all from Arafat's, except for the methodolgy to reach that objective.

Bush now is focussing on his own end game - his own legacy of self importance at being the President who brings peace to the middle East.

In focussing on his objective, Israel's needs for secure and defensible borders, for a cessation of terrorism and a cessation of hatred and incitement against Jews/Israelis/Israel are being viewed more as stumbling block standing in the way of his realizing his objective.

In the result, Bush, is retreating from his earlier staunch words of support for Israel which seemed to reveal his realistic grasp of the issues and conflict.

Instead, Bush is now setting the dialogue/diplomatic stage to force Israel to lessen its historical and essential needs in any peace agreement in order that Israel's needs cease to be a stumbling block for Bush's own agenda and success at realizing his objective.

Israel is so dependent on American support, as it has virtually no other nation to turn to. Indeed, America not only supports Israel, but it has been Israel's protector.

America's influence on Israel and Sharon has quite understandably become so great that it is almost a situation where America says jump and Israel responds how high.

Israel is unfortunately in a position that it cannot afford to lose America's support. If that support lessens, Sharon and Israel fear that if they do not go along and play ball, they will lose even more support and protection the Americans provide.

With the changes in Bush's attitude and positions Israel is being forced into a road along Bush's roadmap to peace that is tantamount a death by inches. Israel is being forced down that road and goes hoping that inching forward towards its demise will afford time and opportunity to find a way to reverse their direction, now heading towards a point when Israel will cease to exist or their existence will be easily snuffed out by a hostile Muslim/Arab and other Jew hater world.

Those who see what is really happening here can only protest in the hope that Bush will ultimately be shocked into the reality that to follow this same course to achieve his agenda, might well bring about his realizing his goal, but only at Israel's expense and leaving Israel much weaker and defenceless against its enemies including the Palestinians that to this day, make no secret of their intentions that envision Israel ceasing to exist.
