Joan, I think President Bush was all too aware of Arafat's duplicitous dishonest nature as describd by Joseph Farah in his 2002 article, The Lesson of Al-Hudaybiyah. Whatever hope Bush may have had in Arafat at the start of his presidency, quickly dissipated.

Your point is well made regarding Martin and Pettigrew, but add to that, Chretien and Graham before them.

Mahmood Abbas on becoming the Palestinian leader clearly stated in his acceptance speech that he believed in and would pursue all of Arafat's objectives except the means to achieve those objectives. The Al-Hudaybiyah premise of Arafat's ways is now the premise of Abbas.

President Bush is now heavily invested more in Abbas than Sharon and with that there has been somewhat of a shift in thinking at the White House that does not bode well for Israel. Bush is going to, if he has not already started to lean more on Israel to do more and concede more to Abbas to achieve peace with Palestinians. I hope Sharon has the wherewithall to refuse to do anything for peace that is in the short or long run prejudicial to Israeli interests.

As for Paul Martin, he is only heavily invested in photo-ops and taking steps that might serve to enhance his stature as a world leader. Ergo his smiling picture with Abbas.

Ergo, Martin's pandering to the pro-Palestinian nations being most of the U.N. member nations with his donation of our tax dollars to Palestinians with the promise that there is more where that came from and his unequivocal statement that Israeli settlements are illegal.

The disgust felt with Martin and Pettigrew and Chretien and Graham before them expressed on this Public Information Forum is palpable.
