PAUL MARTIN'S BIG ADVENTURE THE G8
PM MUST DEAL PRIVATELY WITH LEADERS ON QUESTIONS OF HIS REPUTATION AND PUBLICALLY ON QUESTIONS OF FUNDING REGIMES AND DICTATORS
OTTAWA Stockwell Day, Official Opposition Foreign Affairs Critic, observed today that Paul Martin has a two-pronged challenge going into the G8 meetings.
"Martin must explain to his G8 colleagues how Canada can assist impoverished countries in creating democratic institutions, ensuring transparency, and combating corruption when international journals have reported his own government is mired in corruption scandals and has a record of secretive and undemocratic behaviour," said Day.
Poverty in Africa - "The Prime Minister must not sign on to any statements that would commit Canadian taxpayer dollars to regimes who have not demonstrated their commitment to democracy, stability, individual freedoms and human rights," remarked Day.
Day stated, "Neither poverty nor prosperity are accidents. Both of these conditions are the consequence of certain principles either being in place or not. It is actually less harmful to withhold funds if they are going to regimes that have not shown progress in maintaining the principles leading to prosperity and an improved living standard."
Kyoto Day noted that Paul Martin must be honest with other G8 leaders in explaining why Canada has not yet been able to put clear standards in place and that Paul Martin should not sign Kyoto commitments that are prejudiced to Canada's advanced industrial needs.
"There are meaningful steps that Canada can take towards the elimination of environmentally hazardous practices. That is where the focus should be," said Day.
UN Reform Day stated that Paul Martin should articulate clear steps towards United Nations reform that would deal with the amount of power wielded at the UN by non-democratic states.
